Love for your passion, love for friends and love for nature really existed in this place. Love because I was able to manage all the disappointments and long travel time, love because I was able to manage my emotions and able to find peace in my heart, love because I was able to capture good memories and finally love because I was able to find strength and appreciation from him.

I never thought that patience still exists in my veins… I never thought that I can wait for long hours and stay in unfamiliar places just to wait and see the faces of friends who didn’t manage to follow the Itinerary. But if love really exists your tolerance increases and patience become a skill  – you will learn to manage things and keep calm, you’ll learn how to become more patient and learn how to be creative in spending your time, love really eases everything. And Love existed in Mt. Kupapey ( Kufafey)

The Cordillera’s is really home for me, as I always kept mentioning on my blogs that I love this region, I love because they live in some way of how Ilocano lives. We shared some culture and being here is home.

Mt. Kupapey is located in small upland village called Maligcong in the town of Bontoc, Mountain Province.  Bontoc can be reached via the Nueve Ecija to Banaue if you are taking buses like Ohayami Bus if you like to drop at Banaue Rice terraces. Alternate route also via Baguio and via Ilocos Sur – Cervantes.

Planned as part of my Thanksgiving holiday adventure, after taking time with my team in Ilocos Region for two days I travelled to Bontoc and meet my travel buds from Mt. Ulap for Mt. Kupapey. I managed to arrive in Baguio as planned but due to some circumstances friends from Mt. Ulap din’t make it on time. The critical part of going to Bontoc is the schedule of jeepney from Bontoc Town proper to Maligcong Village.. so we really need to follow the itinerary… Love exist if you really enjoy your company – it would cost you time and effort to wait but if love exist – you’ll really wait whatever it takes you really need to scarifice for love.

The Travel to Bontoc:

Bontoc is known place since it is also commercialize part of the province where central business is taking place. This place is just a few kilometers away from familiar place called “ Sagada”. If you are coming from Manila via Banaue it would take you 12 hours, and from Ilocos Sur via Cervantes it would take you 5-7 hours. I will just elaborate my experienced route via Baguio but below are some references for you.
Via Baguio: Take Victory Liner/Genesis/Joy Bus in Cubao or Pasay for Victory Liner ( book ahead ) it would take you 6 hours from Manila to Baguio. From Baguio take a cab going to Slaughter House and find the buses Lizardo or Rising Star bound to Bontoc or the bus in Central Mall also servicing Bontoc and Sagada. They have schedule trips as early as 6:30am to 4:00pm only. The latest bus to take should be the 11:00am so you can reach Bontoc at 5:00 and board the last jeep trip at 5:30PM from Bontoc Town proper to Maligcong Village. Baguio to Bontoc is 5-6 hour forever zigzag ride on non aircon buses, Bontoc to Brgy Maligcong is 25-30 minutes jeepney ride.

The Place to Stay for overnight:

Ms. Suzette is the point of contact for Mt. Kupapey, she has a place for homestay. She offers her place for overnight stay and also offers meals and will assist you in finding guide and all the stuff you need. There are 3 operators for homestay. She is very accommodating and very nice. We were not able to make it for the last jeepney ride to Maligcong – she look for a jeep for us to take for a discounted price. She will keep you posted and regular check your whereabouts once you told her that you are on your way. As far as I know the place can accommodate around 20 pax for the bed space. You may contact her at 0915 546 3557. In downtown Bontoc Smart signal is strong and Globe is strong in Maligcong village. She offer unlimited free Mountain tea, try also Benguet coffee for P20.00 while having breakfast or snack with rice terraces backdrop..I would love to spend much more days here and just read books while having a cup of coffee.

The Mountain

You’ll love the trail if you are fan of twilight movie series, or you just love pine forest or just love photography. The trail is about 5 -8 km for 2 hours hike. It will start from paved Rice Terraces walkway to open trail and covered forest of pine trees and finally the summit. It’s just an easy hike and short. Just bring 1 liter or less water and camera and you will be fine. It’s not that cold on the trails but sometimes gets freezing in the summit while waiting for the sunrise – guides will fire up bonfire for you to keep you warm. The viewing deck is surrounded with pine trees; there is small window to view the rice terraces. There is also a traverse trail passing through the rice fields but we used the back trail since it’s almost a planting season and trail is muddy and slippery. Ascend started at 4:00am and we reached the summit at 5:45am – waited for the sunrise. Photoshoot for two hours and descend at 7:45am and reached the Ate Suzette’s place at 8:30am.

The experience:

View the photos for yourself. I love Mt. Kupapey – it’s worth the travel time. I love the village scenery, the vibe, the weather and globe signal data.
